One of the first acts of this new Congress was to rebuke President Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry and the entire United Nations for their one-sided, hypocritical rebuke of the Jewish State of Israel. Speaker Ryan said that Obama’s team had, “abandoned our ally Israel when she needed us the most.”
But he didn’t stop there. He was intent on exposing the goal of the U.N. vote…
“Do not be fooled. This U.N. Security Council resolution … was about one thing and one thing only. Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish, democratic state.” Yes, while half a million people are dead in Syria, the U.N. Security Council sets its sites on tiny Israel. These types of one-sided efforts are designed to isolate and delegitimize Israel. They do not advance peace, they make it more elusive.”
While the U.S. Congress has no power to revoke a U.N. resolution, it can defund the U.N., as the United States pays twenty-five percent of its budget.
The measure passed overwhelmingly, as 109 democrats joined the republicans in the condemnation. There were 76 democrats and just four republicans who voted in opposition. However, the four republicans that voted against it did so, not because they disagreed, but because it endorsed a two-state solution.
Staunch Israel supporter Rep. Louie Gohmert (R) explained why he opposed it…
“Hebron is in what was the Promised Land, David ruled from there, and in a two-state solution, Hebron is going to the Palestinians. How do they deserve the land that was given as the Promised Land before Mohammad even existed? I can’t support this resolution. I can’t do it.”
However, the Democrats that voted against it, were simply supporting the Obama administration’s stand against Israel.
One person who was quick to go to YouTube to express his gratitude was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has often found a refuge in a friendly U.S. Congress even as the entire gallery of nations, (what Psalm 2 calls, “The kings of the earth”) stands against him.
The vote proved once again that while the U.S. President seems hostile towards Israel (for two more weeks!), the American people are not. Danny Danon, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador was enceoauged and remarked that the non-binding resolution…
“proved once again that the US-Israel alliance is based not only on shared interests, but also on shared values … This special relationship has endured the test of time and I have no doubt that it will continue to be strengthened in the future.”
Next up, 70 nations will gather on January 15th in Paris to seek to force Israel to bow to Palestinian demands. This, just five days before President Elect Trump takes office. Trump has made it abundantly clear that he will stand with Israel.
