Israel’s Foreign Ministry thanked the Ukraine for resigning from an “anachronistic anti-Israeli” committee in the United Nations.
“We urge other committee members to follow suit. What are you still doing there???” the Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.
Ukraine decided to withdraw from the 25-member UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
The committee was established in 1975 “to enable Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination… the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property from which they have been displaced.”
But this committee has been the source of many UN resolutions critical of Israel and largely approved by the General Assembly. It has become a hate-fest against the Jewish nation.
“There’s no need for such a committee. It’s the example of singling out” Israel at the UN, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Joel Lion said. “It’s the committee that always makes decisions against Israel… I feel that people understand that [the committee’s] time has passed.”
Ukraine appears to be heading in a more pro-Israel direction since President Volodymyr Zelensky’s election. The decision to leave the committee was “made at the highest level, by the president,” Lion said.
